Jim Bowie’s Noble Gesture of freeing his servant Sam

At the Alamo during the Texas Land Grab Disguised As A Revolution while he was waiting to be overrun and killed.

Mighty “white” of him but, hey, the manumission papers were a useless formality. One of the excuses used for stirring up the revolution was “deprivation of property rights” meaning that General Antonio Jose y Maria Lopez de Santa Ana had, through the enforcement of the Guerrero Proclamation, emancipation papers for anybody in Mexico (including, legally, San Antonio) who was held as a slave. This wasn’t done as a slap in the face for the white Anglo colonists, who hadn’t (yet) become quite the pestilence they would later be.

Instead it freed up the Indian and Mestizo slaves owned by the Spanish overlords.

The Mexican Emancipation Proclamation predated the U.S. one by about 4 decades. Not exactly a “backwards and ignorant” nation.

So Sam was already technically free.

Three slaves were known to be at the Battle of the Alamo; a boy named John was killed, while William B. Travis’s slave Joe and James Bowie’s slave Sam survived to be freed by the Mexican Army (from wikipedia)

What got me thinking about it is Rick GoodHair Perry announcing his candidacy. Not just any Jackass Retardican, he’s one of those currently celebrating the 150th (sesquicentennial) anniversary of the founding of the Confederacy and the start of a four year campaign in which a half million Americans were murdered by other Americans over the States’ “right” to systematically deprive Americans of their liberty.

But of course to hear the various Confederate Heritage groups lie through their bloodstained teeth, it wasn’t actually about Slavery… just the states’ “rights” to maintain slavery, and also they smoothly lie that it wasn’t about Racial Hatred, even though the Americans they were holding as slaves happened to be of a much darker skin color. Slavery, in the Rick Perry-Republican-TeaBag DoubleSpeak, is an act of love.

And, it’s not like Perry actually believes the lies he tells. His FOLLOWERS, however, are exactly that STUPID that they do.
Massive underfunding of Public Education shown in all it’s glorious wonder. Look for the Texas Ignorance Campaign to spread across AmeriKKKa oh, wait, it already has, never mind!

The RepubliKlan Party hates public education because Public Ignorance is their one power base.

Just look at the Morons in Iowa and the Racist Lunatic they just selected in their straw poll.

  1. Remember to Burn A Confederate Flag on Sep 12.

Anybody who wants to show his stupidity by arguing that the Southern Cross or the (official flag) Stars and Bars aren’t symbols of Pure Racist Ignorance and Hatred, Too Bad.

I am from Texas and DO know the difference.

  2. I beg to differ with you on the subject of Rick Perry, he is as stupid as he seems. As for the many reasons for the Texas Revolution of 1836, we will discuss that later at length. I am from Texas and I too know the difference. Hook’em : )

  3. I see it as a hijacked revolutionary spirit.
Kind of like the TeaBags but with a will to actually fight pitched battles.

Of course, opting for a siege defense against cannon wasn’t the brightest idea in the suggestion box.
Sam Houston wound up arguing AGAINST secession. Every now and again the flower of reason blooms, just sometimes way too late.

It worked out that a Constitution starting with liberty and rights got hobbled with Slavery… which is neither.

Just like the U.S. Constitution. A long series of tragedies which could have been avoided, and spread far beyond the official borders. The worst defeat Mexico suffered was that the two wars opened the door for the Bonaparte family, and another 70 years of colonial rule. With a few breaks, but… mostly corporate rule administered from the capitals of Europe.

My family had a land grant from the 2nd Austin colony until the oil companies decided to simply take it.
