Diabetes is a common disease of an unhealthy American lifestyle. Overweight, poor nutrition, overconsumption of junke carbohydrates, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise all contribute to the escalation in diabetes.
In my case, it’s thought to be inherited, as both my mother and her mother came down with type 11 diabetes at about the same age as I have. I went 5 years being undiagnosed and it wasn’t until I moved to Colorado and visited my sister, who is a nurse, that I was tested. She smelled it on my breath and sent me to a doctor. The bad part is that I developed neuropathy in my feet and I will have dead nerves in my toes for the rest of my life, even though it seems to be under control now.
Dan’s comment is a good one, but those factors help in the escalation of diabetes once you have it. I had worked out at a gym 5 days a week and practiced tai chi and I still contracted it in my 50’s.
Point well taken, Christopher. I have compasson for those afflicted with diabetes through no fault of their own. Those who have acquired the disease, however, through poor lifestyle decisions have to be held accountable for their actions and should not ask the public to pay in medical costs for their bad judgement.
