COLORADO SPRINGS- For nine months now Carpenters Union Local 515 has been protesting GE Johnson’s use of Spacecon subcontractors who misclassify workers to substantially evade labor costs. Everyday, union members like Jose Cano man this banner at Cascade Avenue, between Bijou and Kiowa, with no end in sight.

I can’t comment on this situaton. I’m pro-union based on the original purpose of unions to protect the right of workers not to be exploited, particularly with regards to safety matters. However, as illustrated by the travails of the US automobile industry, unon needs, especially union management, have to be balanced with the overall business objectives of the company.
