Bail denied for political dissenters who didn’t want to relenquish their children

The news headlines should read “Bail denied for couple who kidnapped THEIR OWN CHILDREN.” Let the public wrap its libertarian-leanings around that one. We presume a custody battle has its he-said she-said, the merits of which a family must work out. But the case of the mother and father who reclaimed their own small boys and vainly sought refuge in Cuba, is about a custody battle with grandparents who got court protection for their grandchildren based on judging the parents unfit –because they were attending activist rallies! I know absolutely nothing about the political leanings in question, the parents might have been gun-toting teabags and perhaps in private details irredeemable, but the press certainly isn’t elaborating, and evidence might suggest the contrary. Piloting a small day-sailer 300 miles along the Florida coast then navigating to Cuba is not for simpletons. In essence, the children were confiscated based on political beliefs and now the “kidnappers” face criminal charges for trying to save their own kids.

These are not activist parents but seemingly mj using and somewhat mentally ill parents. Cuba sent them back to the US because of that. There is no ‘activism’ here at all, unless one counts being a gun nut and marijuana use as being such. See below taken from a news report…

‘The couple lost custody of the kids last year after the armed father was arrested in a Lousiana hotel room on drug possession and other charges and told authorities that he and his wife had been planning “a journey to the Armageddon,” police said.’

Here is another article about the case…

‘Joshua Hakken, who media outlets continue to describe as “anti-government” due to his anarchist/libertarian postings on firearm and homeschooling forums, kidnapped his children from his mother-in-law last Wednesday, just one day after a Louisiana judge terminated his and Sharyn Hakken’s parental rights.

The judge’s ruling allegedly stems from Hakken’s June 2012 arrest in Slidell, Louisiana. The Hakken family–Joshua and Sharyn, and their sons, Cole and Chase–were staying in a hotel in Slidell when police were called due to a “disturbance.” Slidell Police claim they found Joshua Hakken in possession of a gun, a knife, and marijuana, and that the couple said they were “taking a journey to the Armageddon.” Hakken was charged with using a controlled substance in front of a minor, and his children were immediately placed in foster care. Hakken allegedly spent a week in jail according to Slidell police. Upon his release he showed up at the foster home where his children were and demanded that they be returned to him at gunpoint. When the woman who ran the foster home said no, Hakken left.

Fast-forward to last week: After a year separated from his children, Hakken showed up early Wednesday morning at the home of Patricia Hauser, his wife’s mother and the children’s guardian, and restrained her with zip ties. He then took Cole, 4, and Chase, 2, and left with them in Hauser’s car. Only minutes away from Hauser’s home near Tampa, Hakken allegedly rendevouzed with Sharyn Hakken. The family of four then drove to nearby Madeira Beach, boarded the family sailboat, and set sail. ‘

This is a child custody battle gone quite bad an sour and one should not judge the couple’s actions based solely on media coverage. But it does not appear to have much at all to do with any political ‘activism’ that might have been engaged in by this couple.

    Again from another news source…

‘The parents are known survivalists in the Tampa area and have previously attended out-of-state anti-government rallies. Detectives are investigating the possibility that the Hakkens are traveling to California. Joshua Hakken told police in Louisiana after a previous arrest that he and his family had to make it out west due to the impending Armageddon. The Hakkens belief in doomsday is influenced by a series of fantasy books called Temple of the Winds.’

Eric, this conclusion of yours does not fit with the known info regarding this couple…

‘In essence, the children were confiscated based on political beliefs and now the “kidnappers” face criminal charges for trying to save their own kids.’

Actually, it appears that the kids were taken by the police more for the couple acting a little bit messed up mentally. Too bad, also, that our stupid US marijuana laws also acted to further confuse the custody battle issue even more up than it might already have become.

Just because you don’t agree with their issue, be it MJ or survivalism, that doesn’t mean they aren’t activists! Minus the “messed up” factor, this is a political difference of opinion. Anyone is vulnerable to being described as guilty of unflattering incompetence, I know I am.

  3. Avatar Tony Logan says:

Sorry, Eric. I did not realize that you have picked up the cause of Right Wing ‘activism’ as your own now.

‘Joshua Hakken told police in Louisiana after a previous arrest that he and his family had to make it out west due to the impending Armageddon.’

I tell ya….. This case is so fucked up that, the more I read about the subject, the more it seems to me like government repression.

Having spent a few years of my life in third-world countries where political assasination and persecution were at the order of the day, I can definitely differentiate a governmental action intended to protect the citizens or persecute them.

It is just a matter of time before parental decisions such as home schooling, child nutrition, religious affiliation and other individual private matters can become threats to National Security. And it will not matter on which side of the political spectrum you are (Just take a look and the human rights violation of the Bush Administration, or this case under the Obama administration)you will be persecuted the same… the extremists are all out there waiting to label you an Anti-American to deprive you of all you are.
