The US media was not permitted to depict fallen soldiers, in or out of the coffin. Next military censors forbade photos of US wounded. Most recently US soldiers have been under orders to prohibit the press from photographing them at all, to promote the illusion that our Iraqi surrogates alone are handling security. How infuriated our officials must have been to see this photograph in the international press.
Do Americans not want to see their fallen boys? In my recent experience with death, I most certainly wanted to see what happened straight up. Do the families of soldiers really not want to see how their loved one met his/her fate? What utter bullshit! If they don’t I do. Someone should care enough for the poor lost life!
Hopefully the total control our military has been asserting over media images will result in more outright mutiny on the part of international photo journalists.
Not long ago, a sequence of photos which documented the aftermath of an IED led the DoD to forbid all depictions of even wounded soldiers. The picture below shows a victim trying vainly to join his comrades who made it to cover. He didn’t die. But this image most certainly is dispiriting to Americans watching safely from their homes, who are losing their stamina for an ugly war.
Before coverage of operations in Iraq were safely controlled by only embedded reporters, freelance photographers were able to record images reminiscent of WWII, Korea and Vietnam. These GIs fell in the assault on Fallujah. Fortunately for the Pentagon, Iraq is now too dangerous for journalist who don’t have American minders.
A recent so-called breach of an embed contract yielded images of the aftermath of a suicide-bomb attack. The American photographer incurred heavy criticism for publishing the pictures which his Marine unit had ordered him to erase. But they were published in B&W, which invokes the famous WWII Pacific Theater dead, but it does lessen the realism, doesn’t it? These casualties seem more distant than our losses in Vietnam. And how do you reconcile that the simultaneous photos of the Iraqi casualties were printed adjacent in color? We can handle seeing the red of their blood, but not ours?
What exactly was your recent experience death you’d prefer to see “straight up”? Being there as your father takes his dying breaths in a hospital bed surrounded by family, seems to me, to be comforting, to know you were there. Watching a family die a painful, violent death not so much.
Watching your father wither away and die isn’t comforting, maybe more than abandoning him would be, especially knowing what it involves.
But the “comfort” Mr Bush gives the grieving Widows, mothers, fathers, sons, brothers, daughters sisters aunts uncles nephews…

The depiction of our combat wounded and dead has always been taboo in this country. The last time photographers were allowed to freely publish pictures of our soliders killed in combat was the Civil War.
The average American citizen just can’t stomach the site of our boys lying in a pool of blood with pieces of them missing.
It’s not a pretty sight, and definitely not one that should be “in your face.” No one wants to remember their loved ones in pieces on the roadside.
The Mother of the boy killed in combat should not be subject to the same gory images of his death that the men to the left and right of him saw when he was hit. She should not share in those nightmares…
Let her remember him as a boy, getting ready for prom, or learning how to drive. Not as bloodied husk left broken and twisted in the sand.

If a mother relinquishes her child to the military, to be used by its leaders to kill, orphan and maim, she for damn sure can face the consequences. I know 17 year old kids will object really strongly to that characterization, but it is a FACT and one that is legally binding.
Since it’s highly unlikely that a 17 year old is a high school graduate, and in many states (Texas leaps to mind) cannot get the GED until his class has graduated, that means the “educational” benefits promised are just as much bullshit as any other promises made by the recruiters.
The parents of kids who got their asses shot off might not need to be reminded that they failed their sons by allowing them, without protest, to go into the Killing Machine.
The kids and their parents who are being told the line of CRAP about how glorious your war is and how great the Military Life is, those are the ones who DO NEED TO SEE THAT.

I don’t seem to recall ever seeing a US military presence anywhere that was determined by the military itself. Last I checked, our system is a civilian controlled military… That means an official, voted for, elected, and NONmilitary (it’s illegal to hold a public office and a military position) suit and tie clad individual ordered those w/ a camo uniform to go somewhere.

When forces of “Our” government blatantly took away our right to free speech, freedom peaceably to assemble… there were by one newspaper estimate over 2000 active duty U.S. Military personnel standing by. Not one of them testified in court even. Not Even That Much, not even taking a stand that wouldn’t have put them in physical danger. Right Here. In America. They allowed the CSPD to physically assault elderly and disabled people for no crime whatsoever. The most anybody could make up was that the cops thought they had heard us “call them names”. I had to take a crash course in what constitutes Valid Reason To Fight. You know what? Being called a name isn’t one of them.
Several of the “fighters for Freedom” took the stand FOR the police, actually against 7 AMERICANS who had committed no crime, and more wrote in to the local newspapers and TV stations and of course the Local Hate-Speech radio stations to say that we deserved to be assaulted for exercising our rights.

Did you know that the Declaration of Independence specifically excludes Indians from having any rights to “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness?” The same ones who sicked the Pigs on us on St Paddy’s Day celebrate that as though it were an achievement. It’s been that way for a long time and never really gotten better, so there’s really no way, save fighting in the American Indian Resistance, that you would ever have possibly fought for anybody’s freedom. I read a preacher book once, The Cross and the Switchblade, where Pastor Dave went back to Bed-Stuy and heard a familiar voice call his name (this was in 1961 I think) and it was a couple of his earlier converts, wearing Army uniforms.

You can go to any grocery store in town here and see a sign for “Operation Home Front” to support military families impoverished by the war. And that’s while mommy or daddy or both are getting paychecks from Uncle Sugar.
But there’s another word for it, “the Economic Draft”.
The recruiters in Dallas and I hear LA have this gimmick, they’ve got a Regulation Hummer but they trick it out, smooth paint job, custom everything, kicking stereo, to promote the Army to high school kids. And younger.
They’re losing that particular war for the hearts and minds of the Younger Americans though. Putting more and more people in on waivers. It was their reason for keeping Stop Loss in place for so long. The just can’t seem to get enough Coffin Stuffin’ to suit their purposes.

The human conscience is a powerful thing, it strains against the conditioning and the training needed to make humans into organized mass murderers.
