Pollsters detect Stevens Effect in Alaska

diebold-state-seal-of-alaskaObama’s victory has called into doubt the improbable Bradley Effect, but MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pointed to the re-election so far of Senator Ted Stevens in Alaska, a result which rings off-key with his pre-election eight point deficit in the polls, as suggesting a reverse-type Bradley Effect: voters misrepresenting their inclination to vote for a felon.

So why not name this specter after the honorable senator crook? The Stevens Effect: telling pollsters you will not vote for a candidate who’s a convicted felon, but in the voting booth making sure to kiss his ring.

But before we condemn the Alaska voters, let’s give them a chance to demand an investigation into their election results. Apparently the major contested offices won by Republicans on Tuesday polled very differently than the result. Plus, the Alaskan voter turnout came in much lower than expected. Until these anomalies are clarified, perhaps it’s too early to blame a Stevens Effect on the electorate. Maybe the Stevens Effect will eventually refer to a computer programming term for fixing the election result to please a mob boss.

At 84 years old, probably we’ll be denied the satisfaction that Senator Stevens will live to see his namesake effect calculated into pollster projections of upcoming elections.

Ted Stevens guilt at most embarrassing

sarah-palin-ted-stevensAlaska Senator Ted Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts of felony corruption charges. Says Reuters, it’s “a verdict that could endanger the Republican’s political future.” That’s all, for betraying the public trust? Though each charge carries a max five year sentence, reporters predict that Stevens will face only probation. And while Governor Sarah Palin issued a statement denouncing the culture of corruption in the Alaskan oil business, she stopped short of asking for the senator’s resignation. It’s thought neither will the US Senate. What is the point then of catching politicians red handed?

Sarah Palin’s sister married a cop

What does TROOPER GATE say about the potential Vice President, now Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin? Apparently emails and phone records indicate that Palin used her authority as governor to fire the supervisor who wouldn’t fire the state trooper with whom her sister was fighting a custody battle.

How TROOPER GATE strikes me, in addition to the inappropriate abuse of power, is that Palin’s sister was married to a cop. How far can anyone fall from so short a tree?

Which is not to say Palin would not be smart enough to be Vice President, or President, when John McCain expires. She’s no worse a patsy than George W. Bush. The odds are phenomenally unlikely she could be dumber.

Sarah Palin poses with gunHow did such an inexperienced person find herself as governor of Alaska? Probably Palin was the only person myopic enough to step into Senator Stevens’ corrupt political machine. Stevens and his cronies couldn’t serve as governor themselves, they were too busy with sneaky oil deals. As scandals grew to investigations, they needed someone in office who wouldn’t know how to do anythng, much less turn the heat on them.

It turns out Palin was cut from the same cloth, of a rougher thread-count. Instead of embezzling from oil deals, or stealing cuts of construction projects, she’s pushing her weight around in personal vendettas against in-laws.

Republicans hysterically scream: “The Reich is falling! The Reich is falling!”

Bush -no economist, but friends arent complaining
Senator Stevens. Senator Ted Stevens. Your prison cell is ready. He’s the first US Senator to be indicted in 15 years. I’m not so sure that isn’t more of an indictment of the American justice system, though.

Once a con man, always a con man. Are you dumb enough to give all your money to a disgraced preacher?

Next McCain campaign ploy, “Vote for me, I’m white”?

The audacity of hopelessness. Obama’s snore list.

After flipping off the left, Obama falls behind in the polls.

House appologizes for slavery. But will they appologize for ignoring the Constitution? We might have to wait another 150 years for that.

KY Senate candidate called for the genocide of all Arabs. You’d think the fact that he’s also porno star would have sent up a red flag…

House panel votes to hold Karl Rove in contempt of Congress. It’s doubtful Pelosi will allow a full House vote, as her top priorities appear to be protecting the administration, and enabling Bush’s crimes against America.
