Support UFCW Local 7, shop elsewhere

UFCW signUCFW Local 7 workers, the people who look after you at Albertsons, Safeway and King Soopers, may have to go on strike on Saturday in a bid to save their retirement, benefits and hours. As it is they’ve already conceded to wages and work schedules much worse than yours. Do you support them in this fight? Well, you’ll have to figure out where to get your groceries for the next little bit. The more we deny the supermarket chains our business, the shorter the strike will inconvenience us.

Meanwhile however, the search for alternate sources of provisions just might expand your horizons. After you’ve found natural food, fresher produce, or more variety, the big three will have to offer us more of that to lure us back. There are plenty of more traditional grocery stores in town, specialty, natural and discount, where we could be shopping for our food. Check them out.

SPECIAL NOTE: DO NOT go to Walmart, Sam’s Club or Costco, because that’s who’s driving the wages down and giving the supermarket chains the idea that they can treat their workers as terribly.

As a rule too, do not use the auto-checkout machines because they are taking jobs from everyone.

Blue Angels or Bloody Devils?

Young Iraqi victim of US air attacksYear after year, the Pentagon organizes displays of its expensive toys for the supposed benefit of the more moronic of us Americans out there. The so-called Blue Angels are the better known of these militaristic propaganda displays. Here locally we have the Pentagon organizing the ‘In Their Honor’ air show, which is the military patting itself on the back with your tax dollars paying for the charade.

What is it with the neighbors that go to these shows? What do they get out of watching these expensive toys for the uniforms? Noise is one thing, but do they really feel pride in the stupid spectacle of watching aircraft made for killing people flying overhead? What an utterly wasted and stupid mindset!

These ‘Blue Angels’ are made to kill people with and should better be labeled ‘Bloody Devils’. Stop cheering them on when the government pulls these toys out. Watching this stuff is watching worse nonsense than the stupidest show the ex Soviet Union ever pulled off.

Such a guilty pleasure

But let me share it with you!

The other afternoon I was crossing a quiet street on the West Side and heard behind me the thump of something dropped to the pavement, followed by a man’s surprised curse. “Shit.” I turned to see a broken twelve-pack carton and beer cans slowly rolling in all directions from their impact point in the dead center of a four-way stop. A man on a bicycle was stopped in his tracks above them.

A man above teenage years, riding a bicycle without a helmet or spandex apparel, has a DUI. That’s what he’s doing without a car.

An otherwise scruffy man on a shiny kid’s mountain bike has been through the Salvation Army Rehabilitation Program. Working in their center or doing community service in a thrift store is an easy way to score a bicycle. Insiders get first choice, even if the donations are intended for impoverished children.   Sobriety and religion

A grown man riding home from the liquor store at three in the afternoon carrying a case of beer has graduated from the recovery program and been assisted with his own apartment from which to make a fresh start. That’s my guess.

So it was with guilty satisfaction that I turned my head from watching as cars backed up at the stop sign to wait while this fellow scrambled after his booty without even a bag into which to gather it.
