Springs mantra: Enough with COStupid

Colorado Springs City Council
Forget “I HEART COS”, our long-overdue bumpersticker is “Enough with Stupid!” If you think that’s rude and won’t win hearts and minds however pea-brained they are, this isn’t about convincing elected officials about climate change. Their positions are dictated by the coal industry that financed them. This game is called PULL THE DONKEY BY THE EARS!

Gazette not only blocks story of local fracking protest, but assigns goon to disrupt it

City Hall, December 11, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.- This past Tuesday saw the largest demonstration yet against oil and gas drilling in Colorado Springs and the ugly practice of hydraulic fracturing. Several dozen fractivists allied with Colorado Springs Citizens for Community Rights (CSCCR) and Occupy were joined on the steps of City Hall by Colorado College students who’d marched from their campus with banners and posters denouncing fracking. You didn’t hear about it did you? After the rally everyone filled the council chamber to give 3-minute personal testimonials that ran for two hours. That too went unreported, in particular by the Gazette, who had two reporters in the room, one who’d conducted interviews, and both who took notes during the presentations. But neither produced a story — an odd dereliction of responsibility you might say. Even more odd was the role played by Gazette editorial page writer Wayne Laugesen who ultimately opined on the city council’s decision to postpone their vote, as “caving to anti-energy activists”, offering no details. Laugesen actually interjected himself into the rally outside as a lone counter-protester, interrupting interviews being filmed for TV stations KRDO and KKTV. When they asked Laugesen to let them do their job, the goon replied that he was doing his. So the Gazette was not satisfied to blackout reports of the community rally, but aimed to sabotage it as well.

Whose job was Wayne Laugesen doing exactly? Was he confusing his publisher for the overseers who hold his tether: the pro-industry PR mill Americans For Prosperity? It could be. But the Gazette is now hardly distinguishable from contract stink-tank corporate profiteering advocacy. When conservative mummies Freedom Communications supervised the Gazette, the pretense was tax-cutting, tax-dodging libertarianism. The Gazette’s new owner made his billions in corrupt oil, real estate and privatization schemes, so prospects are looking dim for the region’s daily paper to offer authentic news. Having their editorial hit-man on the ground as a pretend grass root weed killer is a disturbing development that must not go unchallenged.

Contrast the Gazette blackout and the relatively tepid coverage by the weekly Independent, with the monthly African American Voice which gave the previous anti-fracking rally a front-page, full color, two-page article, whose theme accurately accused the city council of being “out of touch with the community.” AAV publisher James Tucker has participated in several of the rallies and understands whose interest he represents.

On the other hand, Tuesday was the umpteenth time the Gazette has ignored the rising community effort to oppose the oil and gas lobby. For many months of city council meetings, Gazette correspondent Daniel Chacon has dutifully sat at his stenographer’s seat and witnessed testimony after testimony from community voices without reporting a single one. On one particularly contentious council meeting in November, Chacon summarized the council’s decision without mentioning the overwhelming community presence.

This Tueday’s voices were joined by EPA-whistleblower Wes Wilson and environmental activist Phil Doe, who’d come from Denver to testify before the Colorado Springs council. Phil Doe made an earnest plea for council to support the people of Longmont, who had just succeeded in voting in a ban against facking. It seemed an improbable request, to ask the Springs city council to back the people of Longmont, while council opposed supporting their own. But Doe’s request highlighted the incongruity of our council’s stand. Would they take the side of the oil industry against the electorally established will of the people of Longmont? How utterly undemocratically corrupt of them if they do not.

But that’s council, and there is still time for their constituents to pin their ears if they continue to pretend their only masters are the oil players. With his gentle logic, Phil Doe offered city council a redemption it can’t refuse. Unless of course, his act and their response goes unreported.

It’s time the Gazette is called out for what it is, not just a propaganda arm for regional kleptocrats, but a corporate mercenary spoiler, willing to stoop to unprecedented lows to fowl public well-being.

Downtown Drake coal plant is not an eyesore, it hurts your heart and lungs

Martin Drake Power Plant in Scenic Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS- A downtown businessman’s quip about scenic postcards being marred by the prominently located Martin Drake COAL Power Plant gave local news patsies leeway to ignore community health risk complaints about the coal-fired facility in favor of the aesthetic.

Everybody must now be watched in downtown Colo. Springs – so who will go downtown in that SICKO ambiance?

The Colorado Springs municipal government has now decided to gamble city tax funds into the National Security State by spending tens upon thousands of dollars in surveillance cameras. However, who will want to go into an already sterile downtown environment into the Downtown Surveillance State future? My guess is that it will be less than we have going downtown now. Who wants to be watched all the time IN PUBLIC as if they were automatically suspected of being potential criminals? Nobody. People will instead go into public spaces elsewhere and will give downtown businesses a pass.

Where did this reactionary city government mindset come from? It came from the national military industrial prison foreign occupation mindset, did it not? Why YES it did now, Conservative Assholes. Thanks for talking it up against Big Brother but actually backing it at every major opportunity.

Colorado Spring is actually a small peanut in this spread of surveillance, as we can see Everybody’s a Target in the American Surveillance State from this article discussing what it calls ‘the crown jewel’ in the Federal Program of surveillance of its own public citizens. Could we actually expect the reactionary dips we have on the city council and as mayor to counter the national trend when we, John Q. Public shows such generalized apathy about the loss of our own freedoms? I rather think that we couldn’t have expected much thought from this group of mental and political midgets that supposedly represent us locally, and we got exactly that nothing of thought in what they just voted to watch us with… SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS.

City Hall of Mirrors

As cities around the US bully Occupy groups around on park verges and college campuses, we here in Colorado Springs have not remained unscathed. Monday morning saw our friendly neighborhood “Homeless Outreach Team,” (HOT), and a much less friendly contingent from the city’s code enforcement office dismantle the previously permitted Occupy site at Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs. A surprisingly good-sized group materialized after midnight to vocally express displeasure at the actions of the city as rendered by the police and what appeared to be a rather callous batch of contracted laborers hired to accomplish the actual dismantling. No one got beat up or gassed. The permit surrounding which had developed controversy in our little microcosm is gone and we will now be required to redefine, restructure, and proceed without it. Personally, i feel it to be a good riddance even though we here in Colorado Springs seem to be experiencing a bit of disorientation as a result.

Dan and M.J. of the HOT team, (a redundancy, i know, but common parlance), were present for the dismantling of the tents that had been a fixture at our protest site. Some 50 or so protesters managed to flood the scene, even at the late hour of the event. Despite the relative peace between authorities and Occupiers here, the police present were fully prepared to inflict harm if we protesters had engaged in any form other than the sometimes obnoxious yelling. The whole scene, not unlike other aspects of our unusual local manifestation of the Movement, produced and continues to produce a sense of extreme ambiguity in my own psyche. I like to think of Dan and M.J. as friends, at least in a provisional sense, but i have no choice but to acknowledge that none of my closest friends would ever even think of putting me in jail or beating me up, even if i piss them off.

Tuesday a fairly large group of Occupiers attended a City Council meeting with a previously established agenda, none of which was to address Occupy directly, though it would be difficult to conjure a government meeting with an agenda that pertained to no issue encompassed by Occupy at this juncture. My own experience at the council meeting felt very much like an exercise in futility. A gentleman preceded us Occupiers with a request to restore city funding to his non-profit that helps supply transportation to disabled city residents. As the council and mayor did with our objections next, they seemed to tolerate the man’s speech and then perfunctorily ignore it. No indication of interest or intention to act was in evidence. Aimee Cox, serving as some sort of city liaison, distributed a few sheets describing the city’s appeal process in a few sentences. The remainder of the council meeting involved investment strategy and plans to extract additional money from residents in the form of utility rate hikes.

The minutiae to all this wrangling is just about as pointless to describe as anything i can picture. The clearest vision afforded by the whole scene is still one of a struggle to get things from those that control them on the one hand, while struggling to keep people from getting things on the other. There remains a sense of entitlement held both by those with little, and by those generally smug players with much. I remain convinced that the current state of affairs is fully unsustainable. The global takeover of industry and commerce by factions that appear fully unconcerned by any consideration other than personal enrichment has led to a scenario in which those at the winning end of that paradigm are in as much trouble as anyone else. Sure, if our supply of food, energy, shelter, and so on becomes insufficient those with more clout in hand may well be able to hold out rather longer than those otherwise equipped. A few survivalists will likely outlast inner city dope fiends; but what’s the point? Is the object of human interaction to feel smugger than the next guy? Who gets to feel the smuggest?

Directly attacking the intractable problems of human interaction seems as futile as ever. No amount of negotiation seems effective enough to overcome the entrenched cultural aversion to cooperation and insistence on coming out on top that has produced such a three ring circus of a society. Observe that Colorado Springs’s Mayor Bach is in office after a campaign financed largely by real estate and development interests. Really, now, do we need more buildings around here, or aren’t these activities really just the outcome of individual efforts to scrabble up money? Think about that a moment. How much human activity is nothing more than bullshit make-work designed not to be productive, but to shift money around? How much useless crap does Madison Avenue convince us we need for no better reason than to supply income to its players. I’m suggesting that most of the stupid jobs we Occupiers hear we should get so often are self-destructive bullshit. That the great majority of laws and regulations we have allowed to overwhelm our hard-won liberty, spawning the parasitic legal industry, the real estate industry, the huge regulatory bureaucracies of governments all around, and in fact most of the “work” we humans do is utterly pointless. I’m suggesting that we humans will, in fact, need to rethink our entire interaction with one another if we are to survive our own more ridiculous tendencies.

I’m hardly the first person to posit this notion. Jeremy Rifkin, for one, discussed the ideas i merely hint at above in rather more depth in his 1995 book, The End of Work. Of course, suspicious religious folk have raised an uproar at the mere mention of Rifkin for decades now, claiming him to be a Devil-worshiper, among other things. The sad truth seems to be that fundamentalists in this country and others, of Christian orientation and others, seem content to allow their Creator’s handiwork to burn to ash rather than to work together with anyone else to resolve the problems we humans have cobbled together to our own collective detriment. As little as i relish the sort of fight that generally ensues from arguing about spiritual matters, i’ll be finding it necessary to head in that direction in upcoming posts. Hold on tight, and please feel free to engage….

Now, here’s a surprise…

Our local District Attorney has declared the case closed that the Real Estate industry who own City Hall and the Mayor and the County Commissioners might be using the legislative and enforcement powers of City Hall and their appointed servants in the Police and Courts to rig deals that profit… The Real Estate Cartel. Couldn’t possibly be that Rich People would use their wealth to buy political power and use that power to route Public Money into their already swollen bank accounts.
No, they’re above that sort of behavior.
Or so we’re told, this time by their bought-and-paid (through stolen public money, perhaps?) District Attorney. Because wealth and the attendant Greed would never invite them into corrupt practices. No not never!

Growth Busters’ all white cast asks dark skinned people not to have kids

COLORADO SPRINGS- Local filmmaker, city council candidate, and critic of urban sprawl, Dave Gardner, screened his new doc GROWTHBUSTERS to a receptive hometown audience last night, on the heels of its world premier in Washington DC. Gardner has long defined his personal mission as questioning the wisdom of “growth”. Finally his unpopular theme is gaining traction. With GrowthBusters Gardner addresses economic growth, rampant consumption, carbon footprints and over-development, building to what he’s decided is the most elephantine challenge in the room, global population growth. Except, I’m sorry, that’s an elephant of another color. I resisted the Q & A, not wanting to pull down the evening’s celebratory curve. A giddy panel of white folk is for me as much a temptation as the easy target Gardner chose. In the privacy of the internet, we at Not My Tribe don’t have bubbles we’re too reluctant to burst.

Dave Gardner’s long unrewarded campaign against our city’s recidivist, graft-driven, and ever tragically unsustainable growth is so damn laudable, and his chopping away at the Capitalist assumptions of neoclassical economists is so urgently pertinent. But by folding both into the Inconvenient Truth of exponential global population rise, does Gardner mean the Colorado Springs audience takeaway to be we must distribute condoms to our Machiavellian land developers?

Let me first applaud Gardner’s critique of our region’s imbecilic growth. It’s ugly and residents are unhappy but powerless to depose the greedy exploitative speculators in charge. A memorable segment describes the Southern Delivery system being built to bring Pueblo water northward to serve El Paso County’s endless eastward developments. The energy to pump that water uphill will require the output of an average coal fired power plant, that much more emissions, pollution and coal ash.

Over the years Gardner has proven to be more than a gadfly battling our land barons. When he challenged Jerry Heimlicher, a pro-growth incumbent for a seat at the city council, the otherwise like-minded progressive adversary beat him, only to resign after his victory to make a sudden move out of town, leaving the position to be chosen by the usual undemocratic powers, looking suspiciously like his campaign had been a desperate measure to keep Gardner’s anti-growth voice off the council. There’s more to applaud about Gardner locally, but first–

I know this is easy to overlook in Colorado Springs, but Dave, the demographic character of the Stargazer Theater audience was what, last night, entirely white? It was, and probably not coincidentally, the dozens of experts you interviewed onscreen were also with one single exception white. Further, I’m sure we can agree the economic class represented was equally homogeneous; let’s call it comfortable. Tell us then, Dave, what does Middle America’s middle class white birthrate add to the worrisome arc of population growth?

Not that I think any socioeconomic group should address itself to out-breeding the next, but an audience with a zero or negative birthrate hardly needs to concentrate on curbing its numbers. Anticipating the challenges of exponential population growth is important, but HOW UNSEEMLY for a white community to plot counter-reproductive measures for the larger masses, specifically the darker-complected Global South, virtually all of its peoples lesser advantaged?

And let me add, how embarrassing that a Grist Magazine editor wants to brag about her lifestyle choice not to have a family, exchanged for the benefit of a “more dynamic schedule” which leaves her more easily free to join three similarly unencumbered friends for coffee.

We’re trading our biological imperative to live a Seinfeld episode?

I am not accusing anyone of deliberate racism, unlike the Sierra Club, who was certain this documentary took aim at Hispanic Americans. This was a detail we learned from the post-screening panel discussion. The local Sierra Club chairperson who sat on the panel last night told us that the national office was alarmed to learn that its Colorado Springs chapter was cosponsoring a documentary which called for curbing population growth. She assured her headquarters that she knew Dave Gardner personally and that GrowthBusters‘s thesis was above reproach. In particular, she explained, it didn’t target illegal immigration, which she presumed was their worry. To clarify, she was thinking: not birthrate but immigration rate, not global population growth but national population growth.

Population growth as it threatens America.

Once again we are reminded of the provincial brain freeze that characterizes our community. Even progressive ideals become distorted by the gravitational pull of our Tea Party tendencies. We support national reformist campaigns, but only to the limit of our stunted conservative comprehension.

Yes, discussing how to limit the birthrate of people of color is racist. It’s White Man’s Burden theology to believe that it is the privilege of the developed white world to decide for our lesser brethren whether they can procreate.

How is rushing to Dave Gardner’s defense, vouching for him that no racist insensitivity was intended, very much different from the excuse given by Congressman Doug Lamborn when he called President Obama a Tar Baby? Lamborn explained that he didn’t know black people were offended by “Tar Baby”. Would it really surprise Gardner that his call for White America to be alarmed about population growth, would threaten the of-color communities whose cultures still encourage having children?

Dave Gardner partnered with strange bedfellows when he took his anti-growth message to what he thought was the next level. The experts he interviewed are well aware their prognostications invite accusations of racism. I found it rather odd that one of them, speaking for the Club of Rome, was not introduced with his organization’s repute fully disclaimed.

If I were to guess, hitting upon the population question is where Gardner’s production finally took wing. Friends were recounting last night how he’d labored on the project for over half a decade, one scene shows Gardner lamenting the lack of financing available for a subject such as his. In the local sequences of GrowthBusters, the subject was about development and sustainability, while all the national interviews concerned population growth. When Gardner described the last year spent immersed in the project, I’m guessing that’s when underwriting for the population meme kicked in. The small cadre of usual suspects advancing today’s equivalent of eugenics theory were probably eager to add a fresh name to their roster. Yesteryear’s infamous population doomsayer Malthus was reviled because people inherently equated dire population projections with depopulation solutions. Malthus’ inheritors are accustomed to the same heat.

It is hard not to wonder if the First World’s cavalier disregard of climate change is because depopulation programs are being readied on the front burner. Peak oil, diminishing resources, declining agricultural yields and higher ecological toxicities cease to threaten human survival with the implementation of depopulation scenarios. Presentations like Gardner’s which reinforce the imperative of reducing the world population, create the popular consent with which population control compliance can be manufactured.

I’d have no problem with population growth engineering if it meant applying in the Third World, the proven method that has subdued the birthrate in the First World. Prosperity. If developed nations could share their abundance and education with the developing world, rendering the wealth of Africa’s natural resources back to Africa’s people for example, they’ll arrive at zero birthrates just like ours.

SPOILER ALERT: Redistribution of resources is not in the cards among the solutions which GrowthBusters suggests. Instead the feel good conclusion of this movie revolves around local applications of sustainability measures. Here I should confess I have a prejudice to corpulent over-eaters lecturing others on sustainability. Austerity measures are danced around, and a suggestion of cutting work hours to twenty one hours a week masks obviously a 50% cut in income.

Just as Gardner celebrates a return to hands-on farming, the oversimplified doubt he casts on the benefit of financial growth ignores the technological progress we all enjoy as its result. Gardner lampoons government planners who look to compensate for trends toward zero birthrates. They’re not “pro-growth”, they mean to fill diminishing labor pools. This is why the US invites its illegal immigrant workers. An increasingly idle population, mostly aging, needs people to service it. The benefit of growth and development was by design at least a rising tide for all.

I say we all, but who is comforted by Gardner’s thesis? How many of us have the savings to invest in a house with land to farm, install an orchard and solar panels to take ourselves off the grid, prepared to barter with our neighbors for the necessities we cannot make ourselves? Few of us live near an American dairy brave enough to defy government regulations against raw milk, I dare say that demographic has shrunk to approximate, no coincidence, the currently proverbial “one percent”. How many of us have access to community shared farms? I’ll hazard a guess you probably can’t afford to buy shares in the farms we have already, Grant Farms or Venetucci.

Let’s be honest about who’s supposed to be cutting back on having babies, and who’s in the position to weather the austere future mankind faces. One of the final scenes of Gardner’s domestic sustainable bliss depicted a model family unit belonging to one of the population growth think tanks. I’d like to think this was an oversight, but in a passing bit of the b-roll footage the audience was let to see that one of the white affluent women was pregnant.

Colorado Springs councilwoman pulls her Lisa Czelatdko card, thinks being a dumb blonde joke deflects accusations

Which is worse on a city council? A council member who’s disabled mentally or morally? At least in combination, stupidity gives away dishonesty. Colorado Springs city council real estate proxy Lisa Czelatdko tried to use her position to get preferential treatment at the Pikes Peak Center box office, then wrote about it on Facebook: “I pulled the city Councilmember card.” When criticized, Czelatdko fabricated an alternate tale contradicting her own words, then belittled accusations of wrongdoing, based on the logic that her ploy had been unsuccessful. When she finally apologized, she was sorry that… everyone had gotten the wrong impression! So let’s see: influence peddling, stupidly describing it, lying, being too stupid to recognize the transgression, stupidly thinking no harm done, & making a dishonest apology. In sum: Czelatdko’s integrity ties 3/3 with her intellect. Getting her off the city council might be as easy as removing her chair before the next meeting, unless she steals someone else’s.

Lying may be par for political office, acknowledging right from wrong too much to ask as well, but failing to understand why her constituents take offense is a disaster. I know some find this quality disarming in a politician, for example George Bush the Last. Like Dubya, Czelatdko’s mental shortcomings appear to concentrate in the moral.

In her own words, here’s what happened: LCz on FB:

“Boo hoo. Tried to get (tickets) … with no luck. Finally getting desperate I pulled the city Councilmember card and that (Pikes Peak Center) is in my district, nope, nada, nothing! I guess I just have to listen to them on my iPod,”

When the fans hit the shit, Czelatdko pretended that the story had been misinterpreted, that she was name dropping in effort for the clerk to get the spelling of her name correctly. Except, she’d already explained she’d tried to use the influence card. Not just being a council member, but the member responsible for their area.

Do we know if Czelatdko got to see the show? Maybe her Facebook plea reached somebody who wanted the opportunity to do her a favor. A box office clerk would be an unlikely person to need to bribe a councilwoman, even one responsible for their employer’s district, but no doubt there were businesses out there who could scramble something for the pandering politico.

It’s not that a city council person boohooing is unbecoming, the fundamental expectation of privilege is unseemly, and then especially to pretend it means nothing.

Sunday Afternoon sur Lac du Prospect

Prospect Lake, Colorado Springs, circa 1970
I don’t know if this scene strikes me because it’s George Seurat’s idyllic park, or because I’m nostalgic for Colorado circa prosperity. Circa 2011, the privatization cronies are after our city’s public gem, Prospect Lake. Colorado Springs local John Moore made a video, which features this and other vintage memories. (See video below)

Moore’s video show a webpage on which City Councilman Tim Leigh outlines his proposal for Prospect Lake, a recurring theme among his “fresh ideas” for Colorado Springs, in which he targets now public resources for lease or sale to private for-profit enterprises.

Leigh’s text below:

RE-IMAGINE NEIGHBORHOODS AND REESTABLISH A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
Imagine that, instead of continuously developing the open prairie to Kansas, we took a 2nd look at existing neighborhoods, utilized existing utilities & roadway infrastructure and created a culture where existing, stable neighborhoods were prized and could be reasonably redeveloped and modernized.

RE-IMAGINE PROSPECT LAKE
Imagine that Prospect Lake is fully utilized as the prized asset that it is; where a private entrepreneur promoted the water venue with exciting events throughout the summer.  Imagine the boat house being re-deployed as a high-end restaurant or some similar use all acting as a catalyst for redevelopment of the entire neighborhood.  Imagine immediate benefits to the city – funding the operation of Memorial park, not from general collections, but from leasing fees and new found sales and property tax generated specifically from that venue.  Imagine playing to our vision as recreational Mecca and imagine a public/private partnership creating a community asset where we all win.

Given the recent city council and Chamber of Commerce funding

And endorsement… How, for instance, does Steve Bach afford signs plastered all over town the very minute he announces his candidacy? Princess Lisa Czeladtko, Jim Leigh?
Supposedly non-politicians, right? “Business” men and women, right?
Seems mighty coincidental. Also that they’re part of a so-called “isolationist” political party, or “strict nationalist” and whatever other bullshit way they want to describe their Überpatriotisch mask?
But wait, sez ye, what would the Chambers of Commerce have to do with, say, foreign governments including the (GASP!) British Crown financing the Republican and Tea Party candidates, especially since the Tea Party claim to be Revolutionaries, eh?
Celebrating the casting off of the Throne and the Crown Governors? OH… THOSE “grass roots” Corporate Astroturf “patriots”.
There’s what, Emirates chipping in bread to the Campaign Slush Funds of the ones who manipulate the Racist Freaks?
The anti-Muslim racists who think that Turkey is about to take over the world? Or Iran, or China, or Russia, or Mexican Migrant Workers or whoever their so-called preachers tell them the New AntiChrist is this week? Hmmmmm…
All those bright shiny professional looking signs, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on campaigns for political offices which pay less than that for the entire term? Like Monty Brewster, character portrayed by Richard Pryor said “it’s because they’ll be able to steal it back—with interest”.
Now, the Chambers of Commerce were confronted with this when they were spending billions of dollars buying a Brand New Tame Congress…

Now, we KNOW why the Chamber of Congress would want to control government in America, it would be a perfect springboard for Korporate Diktatorship like Scott Walker in WI or Rick GoodHair in Texas, spending Public Funds to enforce slave wages and other economic giveaways for their Corporate Sponsors. The cops, prosecutors and judges needed to keep filing RICO charges against unions, the penitentiaries, the wars to seize assets from other nations, those cost a lot of money and the Chambers of Commerce are getting them delivered for a song. And massive tax breaks too.

So it’s easy to see why THEY would want to buy an election. Preferably with somebody elses money.

But what, what what would the Emir of Kuwait or the Queen of England want to buy an “american” election for? Ending a sentence a preposition with. Twice.

The Chambers of Commerce said that even though Foreign Princes clearly violates every principle of the Constitution and it’s THE single most “Commonly Consensual Original Intent” of the so-called Founding Fathers who their TeaBag Moron Minions worship as though they were gods…. that the princes and kings and queens and other foreign governing agents giving them more money than they get from American sources doesn’t mean anything because they, knowing that it’s illegal to use such funds for campaign contributions, bribery and other forms of lobbying, use those Foreign Funds for operating expenses and only spend the American Bread for campaigns, lobbying and other forms of bribery.
Let’s say I’ve got two jobs. Hasn’t happened in a while but..
But one paycheck goes to pay my rent, groceries, carfare, laundry, utilities, Internet Por errr “entertainment” yeah, that’s the ticket…
And the rest to spend on campaigning…
If I didn’t have the one source of income that keeps the bills paid, then I wouldn’t be able to spend so much on the campaigns, now would I?

But that’s the kind of bullshit lies they tell us is “standard accounting practices”.
That the Foreign Prince money doesn’t influence the amount of, say, Foreign Aid received by such Foreign Princes.
The U.S. Army fighting to prop up their hereditary dictatorships, for instance.

One hand washes the other with soap and water bought with stolen money, so what’s new about that?
Leigh said that personal problems like, say, anger issues about traffic tickets leading him to threaten a court with retaliation as soon as his Foreign Funded Chamber of Commerce (and the realtors associations in every flavor and color of sleazy) shouldn’t be a factor in his public quest for public power where he can pump public funds into his private business…

Why not take him up on that? Have a few or maybe a few dozen or, who knows, a few hundred people swarm the Publicly Owned steps of City Hall to let everybody know that his Private Sleaze shouldn’t be a factor in his Public Sleaze err Service, yeah, that the ticket, service?

There’s something in it for everybody, these sleazebags like Leigh, Czeladtko, Sally Clark, Bach, the usual suspects, they’re against everything. Workmens Rights, equal protection under the law for Persons of Limited Means, Shelter Challenged (poor, homeless) Student Aid, Peace, Social Security, Medical Care, Bus Service, anything that would prevent them from skimming even more of a profit off the sweat and labor of others.

Come out en masse and show your support for their right to be thieving lying scum.

Okay I’ll bite, why did Colorado Springs City Council candidate Lisa Czeladtko call a Nebraska animator a Sick F-ck?

Youtube scene at Colorado Springs city hall
Actually conservative candidate Lisa Czeladtko called former Colorado Springs resident Dan Robertson a Sick F#^& in an email saying she was filing a police report against him. Robertson has been helping his friend Ed Billings lampoon the aspiring bureaucrat on their respective Youtube channels. Their animations are irreverent, and self-evidently grasping at straws, so the characterizations seem wildly inspired when they appear to have got Czeladtko’s goat. But is it harassment? Let me say for the record, I think the humor will prove just infantile enough to torpedo a conservative like Czeladtko. Where progressive critics elevate the debate, straightforward differences of opinion are easy to parry. No one’s saying pro-business candidates aren’t clever, but satire seems to bring out deficiencies common to uncritical thinkers, for example an inability to see things through the eyes of others. Wouldn’t empathy be an indispensable qualification for a municipal representative? Lisa Czeladtko and mentor-development-lobbyest Sally Clark may be indignant about these low brow attacks, but I believe they’re about to get schooled on the hazards of grabbing for public office as an unrepresentative. Blue collar heroes Robertson and Billings are simply tired of suburban class socialites who think they can traipse into city hall to curry the favor of fat cat friends. Wage-earning, bus-riding, social service using citizens don’t need more tax-cutting, poverty-indifferent private-interest shills thumbing their noses with smug hors-d’oeuvre-fed smiles.

Facebook message sent to Dan Robertson from Lisa Czeladtko

Petition Sallie Clark not to groom Lisa Czeladtko city council campaign

Conflict of interest, anyone? County Commissioner is one of those “low paid” jobs in local government which pays off hugely in graft money, if one is so disposed to take advantage of that opportunity, by voting tax breaks, zoning laws (enforced at Public Expense) and other Pork-barrel subsidies for the actual paying business of the Commissioner. Quasi-legalized Grand Theft would be a better word for it.

editorial note: There are lines even in Colorado Springs politics which should not be crossed. Such as paid representatives using their positions of power to influence elections. Sally Clark is an Earth-raping Fascist a Land Developer, part of the “in crowd” who destroyed the economy of the U.S., the entire planet and in particular Colorado Springs with their Ponzi-scheme federally subsidized Mortgage Ripoff. And who bought her position and vote not only as city council but as County Commissioner. Same as always Lisa Czeladtko is running for City Councilor of Colorado Springs Colorado. The status quo in Colorado Springs shows hatred toward victims of a poor local economy.

Former Colorado Springs City Councilor and current El Paso County Commissioner Sallie Clark is the campaign manager for Lisa Czeladtko.

Lisa Czeladtko has negatively criticized the New Life Church for having helped victims of a fallen economy in Acacia Park. Lisa Czeladtko has publicly demonized victims of a fallen economy.

Sallie Clark is acting as her campaign manager while serving as El Paso County Commissioner.

Sallie Clark must either resign as El Paso County Commissioner or resign as Lisa Czeladtko’s Campaign Manager.

Colorado Springs needs fair minded representatives on the City Council not those who express hatred toward toward people who were negatively affected by the downfall of the economy.

Furthermore let this petition serve as a notice that the whole world is watching Colorado Springs

There was a Richard Pryor movie long ago “Brewster’s Millions: an American excess story” in which the question was put, of a mayoral candidate, “Why would anybody spend 30 Million dollars to get elected to a job that pays a hundred Thousand a year? Answer: because he can steal it back, with interest”

While the campaign costs for City Council and County Commissioner here aren’t that large, neither is the actual pay for those positions. Since every man jack and girl Jill on either board considers or at least calls him/her self a “conservative” and with business ethics which start and end with Profit At Whatever Moral Cost, that leads to a (yet another) wide-open all-you-can-steal-buffet publicly funded trough where the Rich can feed.

Exact text of petition:

Please Resign

Greetings,

We feel that your efforts to help Lisa Czeladtko win a seat onto the Colorado Springs City Council are with hatred toward the victims of a poor economy in the Colorado Springs Area.

We the undersigned feel that it would be in the best interests of the people in the Colorado Springs and El Paso County Area if you resign as Lisa Czeladtko’s Campaign Manager and/or El Paso County Commissioner

[Your name]

Of course my take on it remains unchanged

The City of Colorado Springs worships as a demigod a former United States Army general who used his leverage as a certified Baby-killing Land Thief in the (for now paused) Genocide against American Indians with the sole purpose of taking the land… Used that leverage to get a GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIZED Railroad “free market enterprise” and used THAT position to get, from the Federal Government, and at taxpayer expense, sections (square mile blocks) of land and started the City of Colorado Springs on what is basically Real Estate Fraud, enforced by U.S. Cavalry rifles and sabres.

The aforementioned Acacia Park, which Lisa Czeladtko and others of her Fascist Ilk wish to make off-limits to anybody who doesn’t meet their criteria, largely based on income, for citizenship in Colorado Springs, or El Paso County, or the State of Colorado or The United States….

has at the North-east corner an intersection, Platte and Nevada, where they’ve got this humongous Idolatrous statue of the aforementioned Baby-killing Land Raping Thief which we, the Citizens, are required to worship with our tax money (it costs us to maintain their idol) and is an utterly ridiculous traffic hazard.

“At Smith-Barney (or any other thieving-ass Investment House temple-of-Mammon) we make money the old fashioned way… we hire scions of the Slave Class to join our armies and take the resources of other people and kill anybody who objects”

Questions for Ed and Herb Weinberg to ask Lisa Czeladtko

Herb Weinberg is a retired ABC News reporter. A link to Ed and Herb teleconferencing. Herb suggests taking a list of questions to ask, here’s a few of MINE:

Yeah, actually, there’s a cop shop right there at the park. Did she KNOW that the man swearing at the Uncle Wilber fountain was actually homeless, actually schizophrenic, or was she making a snap judgment? Usually it takes a team of behavioral specialists and a Neurologist and an Endocrinologist DAYS to diagnose schizophrenia.

Does she know for certain that he was there for the pizza or just happened to be there?

Does she intend to make the city parks off limits to people based on her Snap Judgments, or worse yet, on the judgment of Neighborhood Vigilantes? Who wouldn’t have all that wonderful educational background she boasts of, where she’s Super Psychiatrist and can judge somebody “guilty” of Schizophrenia based on a momentary observation, THOSE Vigilantes?

I’ve stopped at the same park while riding my bicycle across town to a doctors appointment, to rest a few moments.

I’m in the Autism Spectrum, does that mean I’m guilty of “being mentally unfit” to use public services like the Parks?

Did she make a similar snotty statement about the Deranged TeaBags when they use the same park to shout their screed that people who are poor and disabled should just F. Off And Die?

Or does their Economic Status make their murderous mental illness less dangerous, merely because they’re in a large menacing group?

Does she propose segregating Mentally Ill and other disabled people from “Normals” … “for the safety of the kids, of course” Making the park off limits to anybody who doesn’t pass her Arbitrary Inspections for mental, moral and above all, economic fitness?

If she doesn’t, why the Hell would she even mention it?

Does she propose an ordinance that people who she judges to be mentally unfit should refrain from speaking to the “Normals” at any time, unless they’re spoken to first, and then the only reply acceptable would start with an apology for DARING to offend by being seen by Her Royal Personage?

Flag pin betrayal

Of course you know I would just never unleash a vicious attack like mocking a fake-patriot or faux-elitist move like wrapping ones bullshit in either the flag or the cross. Just have to point out that the flag lapel pin, the one Republicans bitched and whined so much about Democrats not wearing, the one Lisa Czeladtko is wearing in the picture chosen by Gag-Zette writer Daniel Chacon when “calling out” Ed over his Free Speech opposing a political candidate. Not that The Gag-zette (Colorado Springs Gazette, “Freedom” Communications”) has ever so much as given a mild tsk-tsk’ing to violent attacks on Free Speech in Colorado Springs, usually instigated by City Council or persons very close to them.St Paddies Day 2007 leaps to my mind. Or to Fake Patriotism. You’ll notice, if you’re observant, that the “flag” in question has 7 stripes and 18 stars.

It’s a sign of the depths of rabble rousing the “elitists” will plumb when wanting to silence any opposition to their agenda as “unpatriotic” and Anti-Christ.

“Calling out” by the way, is in Colorado and other Western states, a challenge to physical violence. Usually issued by a heavily armed Coward who is so sure of victory that he assumes he can force the other person to apologize for saying anything.

Then go get drunk with his redneck comrades. Might makes right, Oderint dum Metuant “let them hate us as long as they fear us”.

Maybe Chacon should more carefully consider HIS choice of words. That way he wouldn’t leave himself open to Attacks errr… criticism that lumps him in with the likes of Caligula, King Charles II of England and George W. Bush.

So the Rich Pigs are afraid their piglets will see what poverty looks like, instead of, as Ms Lisa Siddhattha suggests, hiding the poverty from the delicate eyes of the Piglets?

Lest they see the human price of their own opulent lifestyle.

Actually, her ties to Developers, like the Flag Pin, betray her true agenda.

According to the Developer Religion, evidenced by the Real Estate Developer who “founded” Colorado Springs, the idolatrous statue of whom sits in the meddle of the intersection at the Northwest corner of Acacia Park,

According to their money worship Cult of Mammon, the sight of poverty in CS would drive down real estate prices. Therefore they wouldn’t have enough blood-money profits from selling their stolen-at-gunpoint land.

One of their High Priestesses, Janis Heuberger, wrote in her blog that Bicycles should be banned from acacia Park, because “only the Homeless” ride bicycles. There were further suggestions by one of her sycophantic supporters that people who LOOK homeless should be banned from city parks.
Imagine that, the “non-elitists” as they style themselves, seeking to impose a conformist dress code on the citizens of Colorado Springs. To protect their profit margin. And even ban an economical, non-wasteful and healthy form of transportation. Unless you drive a gas-guzzler you’re not welcome in Colorado Springs. Nothing elitist about that, No Sir!

And failing to admit that it was Real Estate Developers who in one fell swoop crashed the economy, providing the pin that burst the bubble of Capitalism, turning millions of Americans into potentially homeless PEOPLE. (notice that, Chacon, Czeladtko, Heuberger? Those of us who speak the English Language know that “homeless” is an adjective, not a noun. “the homeless” should properly include the human title PEOPLE)

Ms Lisa and Ms Heuberger and Chacon might have their sycophants answer this by saying that I’m lumping all of them together. No, messieurs et mesdames, YOU lump yourselves together. Frequently.

Transit Authority “Let them Eat Cake” meeting Oct 11

Public meeting that was scheduled for this past Monday, 27 Sep 2010, postponed until Monday after next, the 11th of October. Strong-arm Mayor Rivera and his Puppet Council are pushing to sever Front Range Express, thus ending any chance of a Regional transportation system, along with the Ute Pass bus service, welcomed by so many in the Back Range because it gives the people as far away as Divide, or really any place like Florissant or Cripple Creek or Guffey a chance to park the gas guzzlers and make the trip down 24 the RIGHT way. The Rich folk don’t seem to care because they can always hop into their Corporate Welfare Subsidized Cars and drive to Denver or Divide, threaten anybody who dares to share their Own Personal Road with them and deduct the money spent, including gas, maintenance and even the cost of their vehicles as “Business Expenses”, leaving the rest of us to pay for their luxury.

Way to GO, Rich Bitches! I’m certain that Janis Beep-beep, Mayor Rivera, Bernie Herpin and the other Thieves who prey on the tax base like that, will of course honor the soldiers they send to foreign lands to suppress the price of gasoline and ensure that those Naughty Nationalists in OTHER nations don’t develop any perilous notions like the idea that they can offer their resources to whoever they choose, rather than giving it to the US and British oil companies at the prices the U.S. and British Oil Companies want to pay.

They’ll honor them by laying wreaths at the national cemeteries, on designated holidays, get plenty of free advertising in the way of Right Wing Media reports on how very “patriotic” they are, and they’ll charge the costs of the wreaths and the costs of transporting them to the cemeteries and memorials from their taxes as “charitable deductions”.

Meanwhile they’re talking about cutting off the bus service at 1:00 PM and ending the Front Range Express and Ute Pass bus services.

All the (other peoples) money they would have to otherwise pay for bus maintenance and operations, thus would be in places and situations where it would be easier for them to steal it.

Their meeting where Rivera and his accomplices are expected to once more tell us to eat sh.. errr “cake” and die, is October 11th and will of course be during regular working hours, therefore those of us Bus Riding Peasants who are hanging on to our gainful employment will be excluded from the meeting.

If they’re true to form it will be at 2 PM and you’ll have to check your torches and pitchforks at the door and go through security checkpoints to gain the privilege of City Council sneering at you in person.

Bernie HerPin, Billionaire Propagandist Rush Limbaugh, have a lot in common

–Like business ties to BP. The USOC deal the City Council made was also a BP front.

Then there’s their Anti-Worker ARROGANCE like this. Neither I nor Miss Johnnie can actually WALK anywhere. Both of us thrown to the wolves by the Corporatists, told that the medical treatments that could have kept us from becoming this badly disabled were “Too Expensive” and the Governments which THEY own, and are going to spend BILLIONS to stack with even more of their Greedy Political Whores, such as at local level our entire City Council, enforce that Corporate Welfare decision with “right to work” Slavery and “Tort Reform”.

My feet were broken by negligence on the part of Halliburton, who were making 4 times as much from my labor as I was paid, and wouldn’t pay so much as Workmans Compensation Insurance before the fact, fat chance they’d pay any of their bills for their Negligence afterwards.

AP and other Tame Propaganda “news” sources for BP come off with an “aw, gee shucks, it ain’t that bad, look, the Seafood Industry isn’t suffering as bad (at one level) See, there’s these chefs who are proving the shrimps and such are safe to eat, don’t y’all worry your heads”. Not mentioning the massive hole the Bastards Punched into the Ecosystem.

Miss Johnnie and I were in a cab going to the store. When I travel around town with her, because she can’t ride a bicycle anymore, it would be a choice of WALK which NEITHER of us can do, ride the Bus which doesn’t run on weekends or after 6 any other day, or take a cab.

The Cabby is one of those Socially Inept types who feels he has to make his passengers listen to Rush Limbaugh spout his SHIT about how those Poor, poor misunderstood Rich BITCHES at BP are taking such a huge hit from all these Greedy Freeloaders who expect to Be Paid for the damage that BP did to their lives.
The Billionaire Pussy Professional Liar claims he’s fighting for the “little people” who had invested their money into BP.
Had to fix the code on it because everything from this point was in All Bold fonts.
Why should THEY have to pay for the damages which were caused by the Business Practices, just because for years they’ve had a comfortable living off exploiting the workers not only in their own corporation but every ancillary and auxiliary industry around them? Claiming that they’re Being Punished By President “socialist” Obama, the one who has obviously Been Punked by the Oil Companies, Hell, he’s extending the wars Being Publicly funded for their Private Benefit. That somehow all the Corporate Welfare that has been funneled into their pockets and by extension HIS pockets is just their due reward. And the Taxpayers who have supported their Parasite Class for so long don’t have any right to demand compensation when they break OUR ocean and OUR planet.

Meanwhile “our” City Hall representative, Bernie HerPin, says the same thing in Basically Paraphrase, that those of us who Made The Money for the Billionaire Pussies who subsequently destroyed the economy from under OUR feet, don’t deserve a God-Damn thing in compensation for it. I recognize the writing style as belonging to a certain prick who chided me for even MENTIONING that Halliburton caused my disabilities, while I was WORKING putting money in THEIR POCKETS, much more money than they were putting in mine, and said that any claims I make for the damages done to me…

Said I was “looking to get a sack of gold” by exploiting their wealth.

Same as he claimed in his email to us that we don’t deserve to Be Paid wages (including Bus Service) that don’t even equal what WE have to pay to LIVE. We don’t have the right, in other words, to organize ourselves in Unions and bargain to get what it costs US to produce our services, our Labor…
Heaven forfend that we should actually make MORE than that, actually profit from our labor.
Breaking even, you see, and actually getting ahead, making a profit, that’s a Big Privilege that’s only afforded to the Bitchy Phonies who make their money from other peoples labor.
Bad Politicians! Very Naughty! Hell yes they need to Be Punished. I’d seriously consider relaxing my opposition to the Death Penalty just for them.
Mr Herpin and Rush and BP are basically saying “Ha-ha-hah! We broke any chance YOU PEASANTS had of working your way into wealth (which is a Capitalist MYTH in the first God-Damned place, propaganda to keep the workers happy as Underpaid Slave Labor) and we don’t have to compensate YOU anything. You should be GRATEFUL that we allow you to Be exPloited by us!”

Yassuh, Boss. Do you want us to tongue wash your Boots in aPology for our insolence before slinking out of your Royal Presence?

The entire City Council are made of such Assholes.

Give the homeless a hand, not the boot

HomelessIs the Colo. Springs homeless camping ban a done deal? Nonsense. The City Council has yet to ratify the ordinance, so there’s still time for city officials to reconsider a higher road. The decision last week weighed only two options: doing something or doing nothing. The police chief carefully avoided detailing the real alternative to criminalizing the poor. Help them.

Will our city presume to prohibit life for whoever can’t afford to pay their way?

In case you thought City Council’s reprieve earlier this winter reflected a soft spot in their heart for the homeless forced to live in tents, in reality the city attorneys advised any purge of the unsightly camps be delayed until an iron-clad ordinance could be devised. The suggested legal verbiage was reviewed at Monday’s meeting, to be formally adopted today. It reads “9.6.109. Camping on Public Property Prohibited.” The definition of “camping” to include: “Sleeping or making preparation to sleep, including the lying down of bedding for the purpose of sleeping.”

No sleeping. On public property.

By the way, I care not the least about a slippery slope that might infringe on your prerogative to take a nap in the park. This is not about the average man losing his middle class privileges to the creep of authoritarian rule-making. At some point I have to presume we agree that human beings have some inalienable rights. They used to be lofty ideals, protected by fundamental principles. On the issue of sleep, we are discussing the right to an involuntary life function.

The right to defecate is what’s got these homeless camps in trouble, but it stands to reason that to shit is more than a right too, it’s a necessity. All of this is dreadful platitude unless it’s escaped our city administrators. Are they suggesting that because the city cannot provide for the services for its people, that the people must forgo their basic creature needs?

What inhuman folly. And on public ground. Where are they to go? Must man pay rent to exist?

That you can dictate the rights of another on private land is open to debate. By whose authority do you claim dominion to use land for yourself? How dare you refuse a fellow human being, wherever he might need to rest his head? Granting the argument for private property, who are you to force your will upon others on shared common property? Others can’t do what? Where?

Do public lands belong only to property owners? You can legislate the right to take property for yourself, but you can’t hoard all of it. You have the right to private land precisely because the remainder is reserved for the public. The authority to give the deed to you comes from a governing entity empowered by everyone. A government is bound to providing for the land-less in exchange for the privilege to sell premium land to the better-off.

And a city has obligations to service that public land just as much as it serves the private lots. Can local administrators say, sorry, no more money for water, sewer, utilities, or security? Neither can it fail its responsibilities to the poor.

You aren’t obligated to provide eat, drink and shelter to all, but you can’t deny men access to the basic resource of land. Would you have men born into cells until they agree to work for their sustenance? Colorado Springs would deny them heat and sleep too. If we could, would we regulate breath?

On public land you have limited authority to regulate. Where private property owners crow about property rights, so do the public have property rights. Every bit, and perhaps more sacrosanct. The public can consent to regulation, for the safety and health of all etc, but that doesn’t encompass prohibition. You want health and safety, you provide the services. You have no authority to deny the service and then deny man’s basic needs. What an absolute crock.

Below is the text of the city’s proposed ordinance. It describes the creation of a new section, under 9.6.109.

9. Public Offenses, fair enough;

6. Offenses Affecting Property, a functional necessity of course;

109. Camping on Public Property Prohibited. Huh?

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF COLORADO SPRINGS:

9.6.109: CAMPING ON PUBLIC PROPERTY PROHIBITED:

A. It is unlawful for any person to camp on any public property, except as may be specifically authorized by the appropriate governmental authority.

B. For the purposes of this section “camp” or “camping” means to use the public area for living accommodation including, but not limited to, the activities and circumstances listed below. These activities and circumstances may be considered in determining whether reasonable grounds for belief have arisen that a person has “camped” or is “camping” in violation of this ordinance.

1. Sleeping or making preparation to sleep, including the lying down of bedding for the purpose of sleeping.

2. Occupying a shelter out-of-doors. “Shelter” shall mean any cover or protection from the elements other than clothing, such as a tent, shack, sleeping bag, or other structure or material.

3. The presence or use of a camp fire, camp stove or other heating source or cooking device.

5. Keeping or storing personal property.

Sleep, a basic animal function. Shelter, a fundamental human need. Fire, the first of mankind’s tools. Before agriculture was fire.

Property. How unbecoming that an ordinance seeking to prohibit the public’s right to public property should also deprive the public of the ability to keep personal property.

Also presented on Monday were recommendations from the city management, detailing the consequences of violating the camping prohibition. They included this paragraph:

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS: A violation of these updated ordinances may result in a fine and sentencing to the Criminal Justice Center (CJC). In the past, homeless individuals have been known to ignore summonses to appear in Municipal Court until it is advantageous for them to be placed in CJC (cold weather, need for food and/or shelter, etc.). The preferred method of dealing with these types of violations would be to gain the cooperation of the individuals involved without relying upon the criminal justice system, thus removing them from the circumstance by linking them with the appropriate service agency.

Making the specious argument basically that since homeless persons sometimes get themselves arrested on purpose, authorities are justified in accommodating them full time. How considerate of us.

Teabag Springs

TEABAG SPRINGS, COLORADO- How did it feel to hear Diane Sawyer talk about our city, poor as dirt, not for lack of resources, landmarks or climate, but so stupid, so corrupt and tax-averse, to have run ourselves straight out of operating funds? Our future has been painted indelibly: dried up parks, extinguished street lights (misquoted as “1/3 of traffic lights,” they imagine us that dumb), our services and security compromised, and public spaces boarded until we can float another financial bubble. Not mentioned: the war economy is booming, and many of the private war-profiteers are local. Through whose fingers is the military largess escaping? We knew Springs voters were dumb, our teacup overfloweth, now we’re poor folk too.

Treachery on the Springs City Council!

COLORADO SPRINGS- I have to admit dropping my guard on the TABOR issue yesterday after 5 out of 4 council members pledged on Monday to vote in favor of putting reform on the November ballot. Private citizens who testified before the council went home satisfied that the city had heeded their words. No such luck. On Tuesday when the official vote was taken, two of the members changed their vote to NO. Council woman Jan Martin and Mayor Lionel Rivera decided to reverse what they’d told the public they’d do.

I was most surprised to see Mayor Rivera presiding with his usual pomp. Alive and well. From local editorials I got the distinct impression the disgraced mayor was no longer even showing his face. Apparently being caught serving moneyed interests, does not shame our local bureaucrats. They’re in the pocket of developers, they know it and we know it. Putting it in print doesn’t inform anyone I guess.

Right-wing KVOR radio goon tries to intimidate city council

Talk radio goonI snapped this photo at Monday’s city council meeting: A stringer for right-wing KVOR radio holds his microphone up to the chamber’s amplification system. Curiously, he only assumed this conspicuous stance when the council members were explaining their votes, and then, ONLY for those anticipated to speak against TABOR and its proponents.

As the councilmen vied to straddle the fence on the issue, this gentleman would slowly stand whenever someone’s reasoning appeared to vacillate against the interests of the anti-tax wingnuts, Local Liberty Action, and teabagger Sean Paige.

Weiss TABOR reform has votes to pass!

larry small john weissCOLORADO SPRINGS- I attended a COS city council meeting today, lured by the prospect that Vice Mayor Larry Small was going to call the CS Independent publisher a liar to his face.

I’m always excited at the prospect of differences of opinion reaching a level of incivility. Do we care about these issues? Or is it all about liking each other, regardless who’s oppressing whom? We gentlemen debaters, after all, are never those affected by the injustices in question.

To the city’s credit, Small made it a point at the very start of the meeting to make a public apology. He and John Weiss shook hands and that was that. What’s more, he cast his vote with Weiss’s proposal, a deciding vote, to put repeal of the city’s TABOR restrictions on the next ballot.

Small is not saying he’s for it, simply considering that it might be germane to consult the voters. Where it stands, the city council members declared their intentions on how they will vote tomorrow, and 5-4, they intend to back the proposal.

Without any name calling.

That said, some pyrotechnics can very easily be a bore. For example, there were grunts from the peanut gallery at this meeting, in particular from ex-editorial page tyrant Sean Paige. The silver-locked loudmouth, now shilling for Local Liberty Action, sat in the back and harrumphed as Weiss gave his reasons for reforming TABOR. Although Paige is no longer with the Gazette, I’ve seen him gesticulating at local Teaparty rallies. Like his Norquesque mentors, the editorial bully is set on strangling the baby in the bathwater.

How satisfying then to see Paige grovel before city council to urge them “not to throw [his TABOR] baby out with the bath water.”

Paige spoke as if “TABOR proponents” need to be consulted in any ongoing discussions about reforming it. Just because those idiots got the law passed, and doomed municipalities to impoverished services, who is to say their voice should have a grandfather clause? Here’s a chance for city council to hear the cries of outrage from Colorado Springs residents who want the damn thing repealed. They want their public services back.

TABOR was an initiative which asserted that a citizen couldn’t trust their representatives with tax dollars. What does it mean to have councilmen say they “believe in TABOR.” They know they shouldn’t be trusted? Did they run for election on that slogan?

Here’s a chance for the city pols to grab the reins. What else are they supposed to be deciding at their jobs?

And they took it, with four dissenting opinions. First, Bernie Herpin, who doesn’t see any reason to rush to address TABOR’s ratchet lunacy.

Another no vote comes from Jerry Heimlicher. The meeting’s highlight was Councilman Jerry Heimlicher’s kiss-fest with Sean Paige. Let Westside voters who rejected Democrat Dave Gardner as an alternative, note what Heimlicher can be very obstinate when he’s decided he’d rather give in to the Teabaggers.

Two more NOs came from Glen and Purvis. Purvis took the chance to compare proponent Richard Skorman’s voice to the sound of a belt sander. He explained how Skorman had interrupted his weekend of fixing his deck.

Tom Gallagher was the councilman who brought the issue for his colleagues to decide. He spoke about how incredulous it was that he was siding with Weiss on an issue, and hesitated greatly to defy his conservative friends. “I live on their side of the playing field.” But he lead the support. With Hente, Small, Martin and Rivera joining him.

Did I say Rivera? Yes.

We all looked at each other in surprise, but there it was, Mayor Lionel Rivera saying he thought it was a capital idea to give the citizens of the city the last word on whether to reform TABOR.

Scott Hente made the day’s most noteworthy remark. He thanked the assembled crowd for having upheld a civil discourse. He was impressed that it was unlike the many town hall meetings he’s been seeing on the news. I took this to be acknowledgment that he recognized the sawdust floor populism emanating from Sean Paige’s back corner.
