The Los Angeles Chalk Wars

Has the US Police State ever gotten down to such a base level of Stupid before? The Los Angeles cops and Occupy are now battling it out over the Occupy practice of chalking side walks and walls with political messages. It’s like any level of Free Speech actually practiced is just too much for the Pigs in Blue there! What are the city government managers thinking? Chalk protests at downtown L.A.'s ArtWalk draw a defiant new line Occupy L.A. members clash with police as they use ArtWalk as a canvas for their anti-gentrification theme.

Don’t they have better ways to spend city money in LA than on cops policing people for chalking? Let’s hope that this level of Stupid never ever hits Colorado, though I am absolutely sure that it certainly could happen. The Police State is everywhere these days!

Houston Police behaving badly

Here’s the link. I think they took the video down from where the former link pointed. The Houston mayor says in a quote at the end of it that whoever published the video should be prosecuted. Punished as harshly as the officers? They got misdemeanor charges of Official Oppression. Not Aggravated Assault, Deadly weapon (they all had guns) and Serious bodily injury. (he had to be at least examined by a physician.) Had Chad Holley returned one single blow in self defense he would have had a life sentence for Aggravated Assault on a peace officer, and the punks would have each filed a charge even if he only hit one of them. The District Attorney and any PIG judge in Texas would have convicted him and made the charges consecutive. He would be in the Texas Department of Slave Labor “criminal justice” for the rest of his life. So what was the DA wanting to suppress any public viewing of their tax-money in action all about?

It’s not that she disapproved of the PIGS actions. No officer of the courts, including so-called “defense” attorneys ever object to that kind of shit. It’s because they got caught. And because young Holley had done exactly what the PIGS say a citizen should do when confronted by the PIGS, he surrendered.

And the PIGS assaulted him anyway. In their classic Uniformed Coward Thug Gang Action.

Leaving people like me the moral high ground when we advise people to either flee (preferably) or Fight The PIGS. Violently Resist because meekly complying with their Power Trip won’t do a God-Damned bit of good.

This kind of incident isn’t rare, the rare part of it is that they went to the ultra-violent where there were civilian witnesses.

Usually cops (in every jurisdiction, just, you know, because I know the Colorado Springs Gestapo is going to object) wait until they have their victim in a cell with the only witnesses being their fellow pigs.

Then there’s the idea that he’s identified as “a burglar” not “suspect”. Meaning the PIGS got him to “confess”.

But not through Coercion or anything like that, right? No little hints like, “plead guilty so we can make the Uniformed Thugs who assaulted you look like officers doing their jobs and nothing more” right?

Or suggestions, hints, you know, that if he didn’t do that they would beat him down again, this time with NO non-PIG witnesses. Cops would NEVER do that, right? Just ask Rodney King. An all White jury acquitted the PIGS who attacked him.

This SHOULD be a wake-up call but the back-the-badge knee-jerk MORONS will still refuse to believe it, even with the evidence straight in their collective face. Like they did with Oscar Grant, forced onto the ground then shot in the back while cops held him down.

Like they did in Dallas more than two decades ago with Miss Etta Collins, 87 years old and they shot her through her front door. Then said they had seen a gun in her hand.

Whoa, Nelly! City of Dallas hired Superman, dudes have X-Ray vision.

Back The Badge Morons accepted the PIG version. The PIG who blew her away is still on the force.

Alyanna Jones, age 7, in Detroit, they shot her through the walls from outside her house, then claimed it happened inside when her grandma tried to wrestle a cop with a loaded gun.

Denver cops murdered Marvin Booker in his cell.

All of them got away with their crimes.

Dodgers sportscasters recall Chavez Ravine, not Battle of Chavez Ravine

Ry Cooder recorded an album to commemorate Chavez RavineChávez Ravine isn’t just the site of Dodger Stadium. Major League announcers mentioned it knowingly today during the Cubs game, looking over at its Hollywood-like “Think Blue” sign, but Chávez Ravine is no mere physical feature. It names the Hispanic community purged in the postwar years, three entire neighborhoods razed under the pretext of a planned housing project, a final holdout kept bulldozers at bay with a shotgun. When the ten-year Battle of Chávez Ravine was over, the land seized by eminent domain was delivered to a wealthy team-owner and the rest is baseball history under the bridge.

Ugly Dolls more than skin deep

Handcrafted to look sloppyDo you remember several years ago, when Ugly Dolls crawled out of the Cabbage Patch like that season’s Troll Doll? We have an obsession with fugly. Except they were trendy, hand sewn in someone’s attic and sold at exclusive boutiques, but had the aesthetic sophistication of sock monkeys, sharing 98% of their DNA.

Uglydolls were the must-have gift for those whose taste was thread-bare chic. These eclectic one-of-a-kind one-offs were, it appeared, sewn by a single hand, or at most by several one-handed cottage industrialists. The design called for single flat panels stitched together without too much care, with scraps fastened cockeye to form the features. Of course the price you paid for such deliberate off-the-wall on-the-mark anti-production-value plush toys reflected where you could get them. Melrose Avenue haute-suture or Ebay.

I found an Uglydoll display at a local boutique and saw the burgeoning cast of character-actors and side-kicks the collection has become. Plus now, to spare the mythical not-so-nimble seamstresses behind the first batch, these new generation Uglies herald from China. There is no good reason I suppose to deny the mass market access to the fruit of playful creative ninnies. But lo, the price tags are still show-off high! Is there no consumer benefit to derive from 55¢/hr wages?

Running shoes which are priced $150 at retail cost less than $2 to make. But we know Nike has to recoup an incredible amount for R&D. They’ve got us running on air for goodness sake, that technological leap had to be expensive. Plus someone’s got to pony up for the clever ads. Nike CEO Phil Knight doesn’t advertise just for the sake of his vanity.

The only engineering required with ugly plush toys is how to inject into the factory process the “slight variations which enhances [sic] their appearance of uniqueness.” Can you picture Chinese overseers enforcing deliberately sloppy -but fastidious- handiwork?

So why would the prices be kept so high? Even if sold only through specialty stores which require a 100% Keystone markup, there would still be leeway.

Can you do the math? Probably the labor expended to make one plush toy would remain constant over the varying production scenarios. Let’s compare the options: Manufacturing wages in the US have declined sharply, but at $12/hour, for how much did they have to sell the original Ugly? If we were considering a sweatshop in Los Angeles, the wage would be $4-$6/hour. So now we’ve half-ed it. Contracting a factory in Saipan or Guam, among the US possessions, would mean half again as much, $2-$3/hour and we’d still get to say MADE IN AMERICA. Moving the production to Mainland China means a prison wage of $0.55/hour. That’s less than 1/20th of the original cost.

Unless we hear news reports of Chinese laborers landing dream jobs sewing Ugly Dolls from straw to gold, somebody is making quite a grotesque, not even fugly, mark-up.

All the news fit to be shown to Americans

Simultaneous editions of NewsweekThis September has been the most fatal month for Canadians in Afghanistan. The number of Canadian soldiers killed peacekeeping for NATO has been accelerating of late and now stands at 37. It would stand to reason that Afghanistan would make the news.

Amy Goodman’s Independent Media in a Time of War examined the difference between the Iraq war coverage on CNN versus CNN international. Not the difference between Fox-News and the BBC, just the difference between in-house news departments of the same company.

What explains the decision to have a different cover story in this week’s domestic issue of Newsweek? Losing Afghanistan everywhere else, Annie Liebowitz: My Life In Pictures here.

The War in Afghanistan has become the forgotten war, due in large part because it is also kept an invisible war.

It serves to remember that regardless of the occasional expose, our press is neither unvigilant nor asleep. More precisely, their vigilance attends to guarding we don’t lose our sleep.

I have to remind myself, after reading any story critical of the war, that our press is not critical. The Wall Street Journal are terrible Neocon war mongers. The Washington Post, cynical war mongers. The Los Angeles Times, bandwagon war mongers. The New York Times, gatekeeper war mongers. Fox, MSNBC, of course cheerleader war mongers. CBS, ABC, war monger wannabees. Disney, war monger profiteers.

Recently fans are rallying around Keith Olbermann and his recent tirades against this administration. I agree we should support his speaking out, but Olbermann’s got a long way to go before he atones for his full throttle support in the lead-in to war.

Over 250,000 Iraqis are dead as a result of our invasion. Afghanistan too continues to suffer terrible civilian casualties. Our press supported both ventures and continues to support them.

Apple Pan unchanged since 1947 or 1987

Apple Pan Restaurant on Pico Boulevard across from the Los Angeles West Side Pavilion Mall
This is my favorite eatery in LA. You stand along the wall until there’s a seat free at the counter. You’re breathing down their necks, actually. Luckily those seated are eating at the pace they are being served. Fast. The guy working the counter will keep your glass topped, pour the ketchup for your fries, even draw a napkin out of the dispenser as he sees you reach for it. In one fluid movement he’s reached your mouth before you do, or it feels that way.

The burgers are legendary, served in paper wraps that stand them on end, the easier to bite. Hickory sauce is standard. The lettuce is cut in wedges. You can’t visit the Apple Pan without having their apple pie, UNLESS you order one to take home, and chose instead to have a slice of the banana cream pie for desert.
